What’s Trending in Marketing: September 2026 Edition

Fantasy football is back, which means half of you are already deep in a group chat arguing about waiver wire pickups, and the other half just read that sentence and had questions. For that second group: it’s not the kind of fantasy you’re picturing. No wizards, no dragons, just a made-up team of real football players that people draft, rank and argue about all season.

Both groups can agree on this: the best teams, in football or business, play to their strengths. They build a playbook around what actually works for them, not whatever everyone else is doing. Marketing works the same way. Every business has different strengths, customers and goals, so the smart move is never chasing every trend; it’s knowing which ones actually fit your game plan.

Bowe Digital is here to coach you through it! We’re sharing three trending video ideas, plus two bigger marketing trends we think every business owner needs on their radar. If you need help getting started on TikTok, check out our TikTok ebook. We also offer Photo & Video Packages where our team will join yours to capture the people and places behind your brand.

“Someone’s Gotta Hold It Down” Video Trend

The format is simple: “It can’t always be in LA or NYC. Someone’s gotta hold it down in [your town].” It’s about local pride, and it works because everyone thinks their city deserves the shoutout.

For businesses, little tweaks like this one can make a big impact. Or get more specific and let the formula do the work for you: “Not everyone can get a blowout in Beverly Hills. Someone’s gotta hold it down at [salon name] in [town].” “Not everyone can grab a coffee on Fifth Avenue. Someone’s gotta hold it down at [coffee shop] on Main Street.” Or more local: “Not everyone can sell a house in Indianapolis. Someone’s gotta hold it down in [small town].” Swap in your business, your city, your town and whatever you’re proud to offer. It takes one sentence and a clip of your storefront, team or product to pull off.

“A New Season Has Begun” Audio Trend

Calling all Sex and the City fans! This audio comes from Carrie Bradshaw: “It was official, a new season had begun. After all, seasons change, so do cities.” Two decades later, it’s found a second life as the internet’s unofficial soundtrack for fall arriving, paired with video clips of pumpkins on a porch, the first sweater of the season and leaves just starting to turn. Here’s an example. To participate in this trend, show us what fall looks like to you. Pair the audio with your seasonal menu going up, a window display coming together, the first leaves hitting a yard you just cleaned or whatever’s changing in your world right now.

Bedazzling Everything Trend

Minimalism took the year off. Thanks in part to Kylie Jenner’s rhinestone-covered birthday cake going viral, the internet has fully committed to covering everyday objects in gems, including coffee cups, balloons, even dogs. A bakery could bedazzle a cake on camera. A salon could offer a bedazzled manicure upsell. A corporate team could bedazzle branded merch, a document or the front desk person (if they’re on board with it, of course). Watch this video to find more ideas.

Two Big Picture Trends to Watch

Trending sounds and captions come and go, but these two shifts are where marketing is actually headed. Understanding them now puts you ahead of most of your competitors.

AI Is Starting to Shop for Your Customers

We’ve talked about AEO and GEO, getting your business found by AI tools. This is the next stage of that same shift: AI agents aren’t just surfacing your business anymore; they’re starting to choose it and act on it. AI agents inside ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can now search, compare and complete a purchase on someone’s behalf, sometimes without that person ever landing on your website. ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout has already been live since late 2025 with sellers like Etsy and Glossier, and this kind of AI-driven shopping is projected to roughly double by the end of 2026.

It’s not just e-commerce, either. The same shift applies to service businesses: instead of buying a product, an agent might be the one recommending “the best plumber near you” or “a highly rated salon nearby.” Either way, an AI agent doesn’t browse your site the way a person does. It needs your services, pricing and hours spelled out clearly, not just written to persuade a person. If that information is outdated, vague or buried, it skips you and recommends a competitor instead. Getting your basics in order now, while most small businesses haven’t thought about this yet, is a real head start.

Real Photos and Video Matter More Than Ever

A clean stock photo used to be good enough to fill space on a website. Not anymore. Search engines and AI tools are starting to treat overused stock imagery as a negative signal, while original photos and video are becoming a real driver of credibility. Getty Images found that 98% of consumers say authentic images and video matter for building trust.

Here’s the nuance most people miss: this isn’t really an anti-AI thing. Research from the Nielsen Norman Group found that when people don’t know an image was AI-generated, they rate it just as trustworthy as a real photo. The problem isn’t the tool; it’s imagery that feels staged, generic or disconnected from your actual business. The fix is simple, even if it takes some effort: your real storefront, your real team, your real product. Not a stock model who’s never set foot in your building. Platform Update: Instagram Carousels Just Got More Flexible

Instagram now lets you write a unique caption for every slide in a carousel post, up to 20 slides, instead of relying on one caption to carry the whole story.

Key takeaways for your business:

  • Stop cramming everything into one overloaded caption. Each slide can now carry its own context, whether that’s a product detail, a step in a process or a piece of a story.
  • This is especially useful for tutorials, before-and-afters and “meet the team” carousels, where each slide deserves its own line instead of sharing one paragraph.
  • It also cuts down on the design work of adding text over every image to fill the gap a single caption used to leave.
  • Carousels already perform well for engagement on Instagram. Better captions per slide only strengthens that.
